GMO Free NY
GMO Free NY is a volunteer-run grassroots organization allied with other pro-labeling grassroots groups and consumer advocacy organizations in the fight for GMO labeling.

We're here because it's time for full disclosure and transparency regarding the presence of GMO foods and materials in our food supply.... Because the safety of GMOs for human consumption is unproven.... Because the FDA does not mandate safety testing or do its own testing and independent research has been effectively stifled... Because we want to stop being unwitting guinea pigs for the biotech industry.... Because the FDA is still turning a deaf ear to the 93% of Americans who say they want GMOs labeled.... Because 64 countries around the world, representing over half the global population, already label GMO foods.... Because we have the right to make informed choices when choosing what to feed ourselves and our families!

We deserve the right to know! It's time to label GMOs!

Our Mission: To inspire and empower New Yorkers to help us get Assembly Bill A.3525 (Rosenthal) and Senate Bill S.3835 (LaValle) – which mandates the labeling of genetically engineered foods offered for retail sale in New York – passed by 2014!

URGENT ACTION ALERT:  CALL ASSEMBLY SPEAKER SHELDON SILVER and SENATE GOP LEADER DEAN SKELOS! Ask them to push the NY GMO labeling bill to a floor vote before the legislative session ends on June 19th!

Have you called Assembly Speaker Silver and Senate Leader Skelos yet to ask them to help make GMO labeling the law in NYS?!?

Call their Albany offices since on Monday that's where they'll be and we want them to return to work with hundreds of messages from people like you jamming their voicemail.

So please, don't hang up if you get voicemail -- just leave a message! Helpful scripts are below if you feel like you need help with what to say.

[NOTE: If you do speak to a human being and they ask for your zip code in an effort to determine whether you're a constituent of Silver's or Skelos', my advice is to say something to the effect that since the fate of GMO labeling in NY is in Silver's/Skelos' hands, his decision affects ALL New Yorkers, not just those who live in his district.]

ALL New Yorkers:
1. Call Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver at his Albany office today!!!
518-455-3791

Say: "Hi, I'm a New Yorker who wants the right to know if my food is genetically modified. Please put GMO labeling bill A3525 on the Ways & Means agenda and do everything in your power to move the bill to a floor vote!”

2. Call Senate GOP Leader Dean Skelos at his Albany office today!!!
518-455-3171

Say: "Hi, I'm a New Yorker who wants the right to know if my food is genetically modified. Please put GMO labeling bill S3835 on the Rules agenda and do everything in your power to move the bill to a floor vote!”

URGENT ACTION ALERT: CONTACT ASSEMBLY CODES COMMITTEE MEMBERS ASAP (constituents only)

Bill A.3525, successfully voted out of the Assembly Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee by a margin of 9-6, has now been referred to the Assembly Codes Committee, where it will need to be “put on the agenda” in order to be voted on. It’s the chair of a committee that decides whether or not to put a bill on his/her committee’s agenda, so it’s very important that committee members who are supportive of GMO labeling put pressure on the chair to do so.

There are 22 members of the Assembly Codes Committee, including the chair; in order for a bill to pass out of this committee there must be a minimum of 12 YES votes. The good news for us is that 12 of these committee members are already cosponsors of the bill, and one of them is the chair, Joseph Lentol. But this doesn’t mean we’re looking at a sure-thing slam dunk. Believe it or not, just because someone has added their name as cosponsor to a bill doesn’t automatically mean they’ll vote YES on it when it comes up for a vote. Why, you ask? Because this is politics, folks! Welcome to our democracy! We are up against some of the biggest companies in the world and they are not exactly rolling over and playing dead. We have our work cut out for us, and then some, especially because we were victorious last week. But WE WERE VICTORIOUS!

Below is the contact list for these 22 Assemblymembers. We are asking that ONLY THEIR CONSTITUENTS CONTACT THEM. We have it on good authority that getting hundreds of calls and emails from voters outside their district falls on deaf ears and sometimes aggravates office staff. We don’t want to aggravate.

Not sure who your Assemblymember is? Find out here: http://assembly.state.ny.us/mem/?sh=search)

A phone call is better than an email, but I’ve provided contact info for both.

If your Assemblymember is ALREADY A COSPONSOR:
1. Identify yourself as a constituent – very important!
2. Thank them for being a cosponsor on bill A.3525 and supporting your right to know if your food has been genetically modified.
3. Ask: “Will you vote YES if the bill comes up for a vote in the Codes committee?”
4. Then say, “Please ask Assemblyman Lentol to put bill A.3525 on the Codes committee agenda.”

If your Assemblymember is NOT A COSPONSOR:
1. Identify yourself as a constituent – very important!
2. Ask: “What is your position on GMO food labeling and bill A.3525?”
a. If they are supportive, say: “Please cosponsor the bill and also ask Assemblyman Lentol to put bill A.3525 on the Codes committee agenda.”
b. If they are NOT supportive, say: “Please reconsider your position. I should have the right to know what’s in my food and to make informed choices when deciding what to buy to eat for myself and my family, just like the 3 billion citizens in over 64 countries around the world already do.”

Year-round Action Alert:
Contact your State Legislators!

2014 GMO LABELING ACTION ALERT:

HEAR YE, HEAR YE! (Put on ye reading spectacles ladies and gentlemen – this is a LONG Action Alert!)

We need EVERY NEW YORKER reading this to call or email their Assemblymember and Senator to push for the passage of bill A.3525 (Rosenthal) / S.3835 (LaValle) in 2014, which would mandate the labeling of GE foods and seed offered for retail sale in NYS. The text of the bill can be seen here.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve already contacted your elected officials about this. We need you to DO IT AGAIN NOW so the message is fresh in their minds when they consider the bill during the 2014 legislative session. Do you think the lobbyists for Monsanto, Kraft, and the NY Farm Bureau complacently sit at their desks and think to themselves, “Well…I already had a chat with Assemblymember ABC, so I’m confident I don’t need to follow-up with him. I’ve got this all sown up.” NO! They repeatedly call, visit, email, and hammer hard against us. They invest lots of $$$ to build and solidify opposition within the legislature. They buy their way into favorable media coverage. They undermine, spread misinformation, and use scare tactics – whatever it takes to defeat us.

Now is the time to fight back! Let's work together to make New York the first state to enact a GMO labeling law with no strings attached! Do you want to know if your food has been genetically engineered because you have unanswered questions about their safety and environmental impact? Do you want to know what you’re feeding your kids? Do you want to be able to make informed choices when you buy food? Yes? I can’t hear you! YES??? SAY IT LOUDER! YESSSSSSS!!!

Well alrighty, then. Let's get to it.

HOW TO TAKE ACTION:

A. Find out who your Assemblymember is: http://assembly.state.ny.us/mem/
Check here to see if they are already a cosponsor of bill A.3525 (sponsor = Linda B. Rosenthal): http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?default_fld&bn=A03525&term=2013&Summary=Y

If they ARE a cosponsor, when you call or email:
1. State your name, address, and that you are a constituent of the Assemblymember.
2. Thank them for their support of bill A.3525 and that you look forward to hearing them Vote YES on the bill when it comes up for a vote in 2014.
3. If your Assemblymember is Linda B. Rosenthal, please do NOT contact her – she and her staff are already hard at work trying to get this bill passed into law.

If they are NOT a cosponsor, when you call or email:
1. State your name, address, and that you are a constituent of the Assemblymember.
2. Use the “Elevator Pitch” below to state your case for why we need GMO labeling.
3. Ask them to sign on as a cosponsor of bill A.3525 and to support it when it comes up for a vote in 2014.

B. Find out who your Senator is: http://www.nysenate.gov/
Check here to see if they are already a cosponsor of bill S.3835 (sponsor = Kenneth LaValle) http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?term=2013&bn=S03835

If they ARE a cosponsor, when you call or email:
1. State your name, address, and that you are a constituent of the Senator.
2. Thank them for their support of bill S.3835 and that you look forward to hearing them Vote YES on the bill when it comes up for a vote in 2014.
3. If your Senator is Kenneth LaValle, PLEASE CONTACT HIM – he and his staff need to be reminded that there is strong support for bill S.3835 in his Suffolk County district.

If they are NOT a cosponsor, when you call or email:
1. State your name, address, and that you are a constituent of the Senator.
2. Use the “Elevator Pitch” below to state your case for why we need GMO labeling.
3. Ask them to sign on as a cosponsor and support the bill when it comes up for a vote in 2014.

***********************************************
ELEVATOR PITCH for GMO LABELING

GMOs were introduced into the U.S. food supply by the biotech industry in 1996 without adequate testing for human health risks and we've been eating them without our knowledge ever since. The FDA says foods that have been genetically engineered are as safe as conventional foods and don't require any special labeling. The biotech tech industry and big food companies agree and have been fighting tooth and nail to keep American consumers in the dark. But many scientists disagree and a recent NYT poll showed 93% of Americans want GMOs labeled. 64 countries around the world -- including the EU, China, Russia, and Japan -- label GMOs.

Independent feeding studies on rats, pigs, and human breast cancer cells show cause for concern and there are documented environmental hazards associated with farming GMOs. The herbicide most commonly sprayed on GMO crops -- Roundup -- has been shown to have toxic effects on human health. But without labels there is no traceability, no accountability, no liability. Labels will give consumers the information they need to opt out from being biotech guinea pigs and to choose for themselves what they want to eat and feed their families. Since the FDA won't label GMOs, it's been left up to state governments to give their citizens the right to know what's in their food. I’m a New Yorker and I’m one of the 93% who wants to know if my food has been genetically engineered. Please cosponsor and support bill A.3525/S.3835.

PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH EVERY NEW YORKER YOU KNOW WHO EATS FOOD!
